The Wise Are Steadfast

The Story of Venerable Lakuntaka Bhaddiya

Chapter 6: The Wise • Verse 6

The Verse

Just as a solid rock is not shaken by the storm, even so the wise are not affected by praise or blame.

— Dhammapada, Chapter 6, Verse 6

The Story

While residing at the Jetavana Monastery, the Buddha spoke this verse with reference to Venerable Bhaddiya.

Bhaddiya was one of the monks at the Jetavana Monastery. Because he was short in stature, the other monks called him Lakuntaka, the dwarf.

Lakuntaka Bhaddiya was very good-natured. Even young monks would tease him by pulling his nose or ear or patting him on the head, jokingly asking, 'Uncle, how are you? Are you happy here as a monk, or bored with your life?'

Lakuntaka Bhaddiya never retaliated in anger or abused them; in fact, he did not even feel anger toward them in his heart.

When told of his patience, the Buddha said that an Arahat never loses his temper, and has no wish to speak harshly or think ill of others. Like a mountain of solid rock that stands unshaken, an Arahat is unmoved by blame or by praise.
