The Story of Thirty Monks from Patheyyaka
Chapter 5: Fools • Verse 6
Though only for a moment a discerning person associates with a wise man, quickly he comprehends the Truth, just as the tongue tastes the flavor of the soup.
While residing at the Jetavana Monastery, the Buddha spoke this verse with reference to thirty monks from Patheyyaka.
On one occasion, thirty youths from Patheyyaka were amusing themselves with a courtesan in a forest. She stole some of their valuable ornaments and ran away.
While searching the forest for her, they met the Buddha, who taught them the Dhamma in the Kappasika Grove. All of them answered the Buddha's call, 'Come, monks!', and received bowls and robes created by supernatural power.
Taking upon themselves the thirteen ascetic practices, they returned to the Buddha after a long time, listened to his discourse on the beginningless round of rebirths, and attained Arahatship before even rising from their seats.
The monks in the Hall of Truth marvelled at how quickly these monks had understood the Dhamma.
Hearing this, the Buddha told them that this was not the first time these thirty companions had done wrong. In a previous existence they had done the same, but on hearing the instruction of Venerable Tundila in the Tundila Jataka, they quickly understood the Dhamma and took upon themselves the five precepts. It was through the merit of that act that they now attained Arahatship right where they sat.
