Liberation Through Discipline, Purify Your Mind & Arahats Are Beyond Worldliness

The Story of Five Hundred Visiting Monks

Chapter 6: The Wise • Verse 12

The Verse

Abandoning the dark way, let the wise man cultivate the bright path. Having gone from home to homelessness, let him yearn for that delight in detachment, so difficult to enjoy.

— Dhammapada, Chapter 6, Verse 12

The Story

While residing at the Jetavana Monastery, the Buddha spoke these verses with reference to five hundred visiting monks.

These monks had spent the rainy season in the kingdom of Kosala. At its close, they came to the Jetavana Monastery to see the Buddha, paid homage to him, and sat respectfully to one side.

After listening to the account of their experiences, the Buddha instructed them in the Dhamma by reciting these verses.
